Internet Computer Protocol Promotes Blockchain Engagement in Africa

Nigerian youths have been urged to actively engage with blockchain technology to enhance their global competitiveness. Adedayo Adebajo, co-founder of ICP Hub Sahara, emphasized this during the second DecaHack cohort held at the University of Ibadan (UI) in Oyo State. ICP Hub Sahara is an official branch of the Internet Computer Protocol ecosystem, and DecaHack is an ICP-run initiative that offers online blockchain boot camps, hackathons, and a stage pitch competition for prizes.

Encouragement to Leverage ICP

Adebajo stressed the importance of embracing blockchain technology, warning that neglecting this innovation could have severe implications for Nigeria’s future. The Internet Computer is a public, smart contract-capable mainnet blockchain where developers can construct decentralized applications (DApps) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

“The integration of blockchain technology is crucial for the future development and competitiveness of our nation,” Adebajo stated. “By engaging with this technology, Nigerian youths can position themselves at the forefront of global innovation.”

The DecaHack event brings together innovators, experts, and blockchain enthusiasts from across Africa. Its goal is to foster discussions, presentations, and networking opportunities to advance the continent’s technological landscape. The initiative seeks to provide a platform for young Nigerians to develop their skills and ideas in blockchain technology, thereby positioning them for future success in the global digital economy.

Bridging Blockchain Interoperability

During the event, Ucheena Agams, Web3 ambassador for Arbitrum, delivered a presentation titled “The Future of Interoperability: How Web3 Innovators Can Bridge the Gap Between Blockchain and DApps.” Agams analyzed how Web3 innovators could address the interoperability gap, highlighting the potential of Web3 technologies to create seamless connections between different blockchain platforms.

Agams also delved into the technical aspects of front-end development, illustrating the crucial role of front-end developers in designing user interfaces and experiences for websites and applications. His session underscored the importance of front-end skills in making blockchain technology accessible and user-friendly.

The competition’s organizers announced that the top five startups would receive up to $25,000 in equity-free grants. Winners will also progress to the national grand finale, Nigeria’s most prominent blockchain hackathon conference. Additionally, all finalists will receive advisory support, mentorship, and access to ICP grant applications.

These rewards aim to provide the necessary resources and support for young innovators to bring their blockchain projects to fruition. By offering financial assistance and expert guidance, the initiative hopes to nurture the next generation of blockchain leaders in Nigeria.
