For a beachside community built around weekend sport, surf lifesaving and social sport leagues, Just Smile says two of this year’s Dental Health Week themes hit particularly close to home for local young adults: sports mouthguards and wisdom teeth.
“Ramsgate Beach and the Shire have such an active, outdoor culture, and we see a lot of sports injuries that could have been avoided with a proper custom-fitted mouthguard,” said Dr Abir Rammo, principal dentist at Just Smile. “A chipped or knocked-out tooth from footy, touch football or surf sport isn’t a quick fix — it can mean years of ongoing treatment. It’s such a simple thing to prevent.”
The ADA’s Dental Health Week materials also highlight wisdom teeth, which typically emerge between the ages of 18 and 25 and can cause pain, crowding or infection if left unmonitored. Dr Rammo says this is an age group Just Smile sees often, particularly young adults who have moved out of home for the first time, whether for study, work or independence, and no longer have a family dentist keeping an eye on things.
“That’s really the heart of this year’s campaign — young people are moving out, starting jobs, learning to manage their own money, and dental care quietly slips down the list,” Dr Rammo said. “We also know this generation often turns to social media before a professional when something doesn’t feel right with their teeth. Our message for Dental Health Week is to come and see us first, before a small issue like an emerging wisdom tooth turns into an infection or emergency.”
