Uber Expands ChatGPT Work to More Than 30,000 Employees Worldwide

Uber has expanded its partnership with OpenAI to deploy ChatGPT Work across its global workforce of more than 30,000 employees, following an initial pilot involving 1,000 workers. The company announced the rollout on October 22, 2026, making the AI agent available to employees across finance, operations, marketing, product development, and other departments.

According to the joint announcement with OpenAI, the expansion marks Uber’s first company-wide deployment of an AI agent designed for complex, multi-step office tasks. ChatGPT Work, introduced in July, allows employees to conduct research, analyze information, create documents, and complete tasks across connected business applications.

Uber Expands AI Deployment Following Employee Pilot

Uber initially tested ChatGPT Work with 1,000 employees from different business functions, including finance, operations, and product teams. Approximately 80% of participants were non-engineers, according to Sumanth Sukumar, Uber’s vice president of engineering.

During the pilot, employees used the platform to analyze operational data, identify trends, and develop recommendations. They also translated training materials for different markets and created personalized dashboards to manage daily activities.

Uber conducted a separate initiative involving 30 AI engineers who worked directly with teams across the company for two weeks. The project, known internally as AI pods, focused on identifying tasks that could be automated using AI.

Sukumar said Uber intends to make the technology widely available while allowing individual teams to experiment with different applications. The company has not established a fixed set of tasks that employees must perform using ChatGPT Work.

ChatGPT Work Connects With Business Applications

ChatGPT Work operates within ChatGPT Enterprise and integrates with applications including Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, and Slack. Employees can use it to prepare meeting briefings, develop presentations, analyze datasets, and carry out tasks involving multiple software tools.

The platform will use OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Sol model by default, while also providing access to voice and image-generation capabilities. Uber’s software engineering teams will continue using Codex for programming and other development work.

Uber is supporting the rollout through an internal AI skills library, approved integrations, and employee training. Uber’s official announcement said these resources would help employees identify practical applications for the technology across their departments.

Uber Plans to Measure AI Adoption and Productivity

Uber has not disclosed the financial terms of its expanded agreement with OpenAI. Instead, the company plans to evaluate how employees use ChatGPT Work, which workflows they develop, and whether the technology improves their effectiveness.

Sukumar said those findings would guide future decisions about AI deployment throughout the company. Uber and OpenAI also plan to share additional information about adoption, applications, and measurable outcomes as the rollout progresses.

The agreement represents another large enterprise deployment for OpenAI as it competes with Anthropic and other AI providers for corporate customers. It also extends the companies’ existing collaboration into daily business operations across Uber’s international workforce.
