Microsoft Offers Voluntary Buyouts to 60,000 Employees Amid AI Spending Push

Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to approximately 60,000 employees across four countries as the company seeks to control costs and adjust its workforce amid rising artificial intelligence investments. Announced on October 26, 2026, the program covers more than a quarter of Microsoft’s global workforce of 223,000 employees.

The initiative, called the Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO), allows eligible employees to leave the company with financial support and career planning resources. According to Microsoft’s official announcement, the program is voluntary and available for a limited period.

Employees Across Four Countries Eligible for Buyouts

The program applies to employees at internal level 70 and below in selected teams across the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom. Participating divisions include Xbox, Windows and Devices, Copilot, AI Experiences, Finance and Human Resources, while employees in data centers, sales, marketing and certain other departments are excluded.

Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman informed employees about the program through an internal communication published on the company’s website. Eligible workers began receiving emails on October 26 containing details of their individual buyout packages.

The compensation arrangements are similar to Microsoft’s standard severance terms, with payments varying according to seniority, location and length of service. The company has not disclosed how many employees it expects to accept the offers or how much the program could cost.

Microsoft Adjusts Workforce Amid Rising AI Investments

Microsoft has been restructuring parts of its business while committing substantial resources to AI infrastructure and product development. The company has projected approximately $175 billion in capital expenditure for 2026, largely driven by investments in data centers and computing infrastructure.

Coleman said the voluntary program provides employees considering opportunities outside Microsoft with an additional way to leave the company. She also described it as a mechanism for participating divisions to adjust staffing according to changing operational requirements.

The initiative follows Microsoft’s earlier workforce reductions, including approximately 4,800 job cuts announced in July, particularly affecting its Xbox gaming operations. The company has also been adjusting staffing across other divisions as part of its restructuring efforts.

Earlier Retirement Program Recorded Strong Participation

Microsoft previously introduced a voluntary retirement program in April 2026 for approximately 8,750 eligible US employees. More than 30% accepted the offer, according to figures reported by Bloomberg, providing the company with experience in voluntary workforce reductions.

Unlike the earlier retirement-focused initiative, the new program covers a wider range of employees, including some management positions. Microsoft said participation will depend on individual business priorities, customer commitments and staffing requirements.

Coleman added that Microsoft would continue supporting employee development, internal career opportunities and skills training alongside the voluntary exit program. The company has not announced whether additional buyout initiatives will follow.
