India’s conglomerate Jio has partnered with Taiwanese semiconductor leader MediaTek to enhance the growing electric scooter market with advanced digital dashboards. Announced at an industry event in New Delhi on Thursday, the collaboration will see MediaTek supplying chips and Jio providing an Android-based operating system, along with hardware, for electric scooters in India and potentially other emerging markets. The digital instrument clusters, running on Android-based AvniOS, are powered by MediaTek’s MT8766 and MT8768 system-on-chips.

This partnership is expected to significantly benefit both companies. India, one of the largest two-wheeler markets globally, aims to have all new two-wheeler sales as electric vehicles by 2030. Jio plans to leverage this collaboration to increase its revenue through 4G subscriptions for vehicle owners, cloud and mapping solutions, and eventually monetizing data from its 4G clusters and modules.
JioThings, a subsidiary of Jio Platforms, has been working on these two-wheeler clusters since last year, with a dedicated team in Bengaluru developing the Android-based operating system for electric vehicles. The system offers features like real-time data analytics, customizable interfaces, voice recognition, and integration with vehicle controllers and IoT-enabled charging infrastructure. It also includes a preloaded battery management system and the Jio Automotive App Suite, providing access to services such as Jio Voice Assistant, music streaming app JioSaavn, web browser JioPages, and geolocation service JioXploR.
CK Wang, General Manager of MediaTek’s IoT business unit, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting MediaTek’s strong position to support both established and emerging players in the evolving two-wheeler market, particularly in the electric vehicle sector.
Jio and MediaTek’s collaboration extends beyond two-wheelers, with the companies exploring opportunities with automobile manufacturers in India to integrate their clusters and operating systems. Jio, which is expected to spin off from Reliance Industries with an IPO valuation of $112 billion, is expanding its presence in the automotive market. Last year, Jio launched an onboard diagnostics device with a built-in eSIM, enabling four-wheeler owners to track and diagnose their vehicles using the JioThings app. Additionally, Jio offers a smart EV charging suite with customizable infrastructure for businesses and residential communities.
