OpenAI Acquires TBPN Tech Talk Show In First Media Deal

OpenAI has acquired the Technology Business Programming Network (TBPN), marking its first purchase of a media company as it expands its communication and public engagement strategy.

The deal brings the tech-focused talk show under OpenAI’s strategy team, where it will report to Chris Lehane.

TBPN’s Role And Audience In Tech Media

Technology Business Programming Network is hosted by former founders John Coogan and Jordi Hays, and broadcasts daily for three hours on YouTube and X.

The program focuses on technology, business, artificial intelligence, and defense topics, and has built a following within Silicon Valley. It frequently features executives such as Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, Marc Benioff, and Sam Altman.

The show is expected to generate more than $30 million in revenue this year, according to reporting cited in the announcement.

Editorial Structure And Independence

OpenAI said TBPN will continue operating as a standalone brand, maintaining control over its programming, guest selection, and editorial decisions.

Fidji Simo said the show’s communication approach would help present AI developments in ways that are more accessible to broader audiences.

The company also plans to use the hosts’ experience in communications and marketing beyond the show itself.

Strategic Context And Industry Reaction

The acquisition places a media platform that frequently discusses OpenAI and its competitors within the company’s internal structure, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest despite assurances of editorial independence.

Lehane, who oversees the integration, has previously worked in political communications and is associated with initiatives such as the crypto-focused political group Fairshake.

OpenAI has been increasing its public-facing efforts as it develops and deploys AI technologies, alongside its existing podcast and other outreach channels.

Positioning Within OpenAI’s Broader Strategy

CEO Sam Altman indicated that the company does not expect TBPN to change its tone or reduce criticism following the acquisition.

TBPN’s co-hosts said the move allows the show to expand its role from industry commentary to contributing more directly to how AI technologies are understood and distributed globally.
