Dyson Hot+Cool HF1 Review: Smart Heating and Cooling in One Compact Device

The Dyson Hot+Cool HF1 is a compact two-in-one appliance designed to provide heating during colder months and cooling airflow in warmer weather. Priced at $499 in the U.S., it combines Dyson’s bladeless design with app controls, scheduling and quiet operation.

Dyson provided the review unit, which will be returned after testing. After three months of use, the HF1 proved more convenient than operating separate space heaters and fans, largely because of its connected features.

The device can be controlled using its onboard dial, magnetic remote or the MyDyson app. The app allows users to switch the unit on remotely, adjust airflow, control oscillation, set timers and create a seven-day schedule.

Smart Controls Are the Main Advantage

Remote access makes the HF1 particularly useful when moving between rooms or preparing a space in advance. Users can schedule the heater to turn on before waking up or preheat a room before arriving home.

The intelligent thermostat continuously monitors the room temperature and adjusts the heating output to reach and maintain a selected target. This avoids running the heater at full power when the room has already reached the desired temperature.

Dyson introduced the HF1 as part of its latest air-treatment product lineup, describing it as its quietest and most powerful heater and cooling fan. The company says it can heat a room 20% faster than its previous model and is up to 25% quieter.

The cooling mode needs one important clarification. The HF1 is a powerful fan, not an air conditioner, so it circulates air around the room without lowering the ambient temperature.

Quiet Enough for Bedrooms

Sleep mode reduces operating noise to 26 decibels and dims the display. The low noise level makes the HF1 suitable for bedrooms and home offices, particularly when used at lower airflow settings.

Users can manually tilt the unit to direct airflow and choose between 15-degree, 40-degree and 70-degree oscillation. The wider settings are useful for circulating warm or cool air across a larger part of a room.

The fan stands about 23 inches tall and weighs approximately 5.9 pounds. Its relatively small footprint makes it easy to carry between rooms without taking up much floor space.

Bladeless Design Simplifies Cleaning

The HF1’s bladeless loop is easier to maintain than a conventional fan with exposed blades and grilles. Dust can usually be removed with a quick wipe rather than disassembling several parts.

The absence of fast-spinning blades also makes the appliance more suitable for homes with pets or children. It automatically shuts off if it is knocked over and includes a child-lock option through its controls.

However, the metal area around the front can become warm during heating. The appliance should still be positioned where children and pets cannot lean against it while it is operating.

The HF1 does not include an air purifier or replaceable filters. Users who need heating, cooling and air filtration will need to consider one of Dyson’s more expensive purifier models instead.

A Premium but Convenient Upgrade

The HF1’s main weakness is its price. Standard fans and space heaters can perform the same basic functions for much less, and the cooling mode will not replace an air conditioner during extreme heat.

What the HF1 offers is convenience. It replaces two seasonal appliances, takes up little space and can be controlled or scheduled from a phone.

For users who value smart controls, quiet operation and simple maintenance, the HF1 is a compelling year-round appliance. Those who need only basic heating or cooling may find it difficult to justify the premium.
