WhatsApp is rolling out new features that extend the messaging service across tablets, vehicles, desktop computers and other apps. Users can now create an account directly from an iPad, access more functions through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, edit PDFs inside chats and share music to Status.
The features are already being introduced, according to WhatsApp’s official announcement. The company said the changes are intended to make the service work more consistently across the devices and applications people use each day.
iPad Users Can Create Standalone Accounts
Users can now register for WhatsApp directly through its iPad app instead of linking the tablet to an existing account on a phone. A phone number and access to the one-time verification code are still required during registration.
Once the account is created, WhatsApp can operate independently on the iPad rather than treating it as a companion device. The company introduced its dedicated iPad app last year but initially required users to connect it to a primary phone.
CarPlay and Android Auto Gain More Controls
WhatsApp has refreshed its experience for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Drivers can now hear and reply to messages, make calls, review call history and contact favourite people through the vehicle’s display and hands-free controls.
The earlier CarPlay version offered fewer functions, largely limiting users to composing messages and placing calls. The expanded controls reduce the need to interact directly with a phone while driving.
PDFs Open and Edit Inside Chats
WhatsApp users on web and desktop can open PDF documents without downloading them first. They can also make basic changes, including highlighting text and adding annotations, through technology provided by Adobe Acrobat.
The edited document remains within the conversation, reducing the need to switch to a separate PDF application. WhatsApp has not said when the same editing functions will reach its mobile apps.
Music Can Be Shared to Status
Users can now send songs directly from Apple Music or Spotify to their WhatsApp Status. Friends who view the update can see what the user is listening to without the song being manually added through another sharing process.
The latest release follows other recent additions, including usernames that allow people to connect without displaying their phone numbers. Meta has also introduced WhatsApp Plus, a subscription offering with profile customisation, additional reactions and Status insights.
