Google has introduced a new migration system in Android 17 that lets users wirelessly transfer more data from an iPhone without installing a separate app. The upgraded process supports photos, videos, contacts, messages and calendars, along with passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, Google Account details and eligible eSIMs.
The feature has started rolling out to selected Pixel devices and is included with Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 series. Google said support will reach additional Android phones later.
QR Code Starts the Wireless Transfer
During the setup of an eligible Android phone, users can select the option to copy data from an iPhone or iPad. A QR code then appears on the Android device, which users scan with the camera on their iPhone to pair the two phones wirelessly.
Google’s official announcement said the new system is built directly into Android 17. It removes the need to download the Android Switch app before beginning the migration.
Users can continue setting up the Android phone while information is being transferred. Both devices must remain connected until the process finishes, and available data may vary depending on the phone manufacturer and transfer method.
Passwords and eSIMs Join Supported Data
The previous wireless process primarily supported content such as contacts, messages, photos, videos and calendar events. The upgraded system can also transfer passwords and passkeys, saved Wi-Fi details, a Google Account, call history, device settings, alarms and supported applications.
Eligible eSIMs can move during setup, although availability depends on the user’s mobile carrier. Google’s Android switching guide lists eSIM transfer among the new supported functions.
Users switching from iMessage must still disable the service to ensure future text messages reach the Android device. WhatsApp chat histories follow a separate transfer process after the main setup is completed.
Pixel and Galaxy Devices Receive Early Access
Google’s support documentation says the upgraded transfer process is available on Pixel 8 devices and newer running Android 17, with updated Pixel 9 models receiving the full experience.
Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8 support wireless transfers from compatible iPhones through an updated Smart Switch process. Samsung noted that both Android 17 and a recent iOS version are required, while eSIM support varies by carrier.
