Apple is introducing MapKit for Automotive, a software development kit that lets automakers embed Apple Maps directly into vehicle infotainment systems. Ford will be the first manufacturer to use the technology when its Universal Electric Vehicle Platform launches in 2027 with a midsize electric truck priced at about $30,000.
The integration runs natively in the vehicle and does not depend on an iPhone. CarPlay will remain available separately in Ford vehicles.
Apple Maps Will Run Directly on Ford Displays
MapKit for Automotive allows manufacturers to customise Apple Maps so its appearance matches their vehicle interfaces. Drivers will receive natural-language turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic and incident information, destination search and detailed place information.
The system will also provide EV-specific routing and battery preconditioning. Preparing the battery before the vehicle reaches a charger can reduce charging time by bringing it to a suitable temperature.
Apple said in its official announcement that it will not collect location details or activity from the vehicle’s map in a way that can be connected to an individual user.
Road Data Will Support BlueCruise
Ford will use road-level information from Apple Maps to support the next generation of its BlueCruise hands-free driver-assistance system. The upgraded technology is being developed to manage highway journeys from the entrance ramp to the exit ramp.
BlueCruise will still require drivers to remain attentive during its initial rollout. Ford has said it plans to develop more advanced point-to-point driving capabilities before moving towards eyes-off operation in 2028.
The mapping platform could also support vehicle functions beyond navigation. Ford may use location information for smart home controls, fleet routing and displaying nearby commercial vehicles or job sites.
Ford Builds New Electric Vehicle Platform
Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle Platform will first support the planned midsize truck. The company expects the architecture to later underpin a sedan, crossover, three-row SUV and smaller commercial vans.
The vehicles will use fewer individual parts and large aluminium castings to simplify assembly. Ford is also developing a new electrical architecture intended to support faster software updates and more responsive in-vehicle functions.
Apple said MapKit for Automotive will be available to other automakers, although Ford is its first announced partner. The companies have signed a commercial agreement but have not disclosed its financial terms.
