Robert B. Payne, the Fredericksburg home-comfort company serving the area since 1930, today announced that summer service scheduling is now open and is encouraging homeowners across Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania, and King George to have their air conditioning systems checked before peak heat arrives.
The announcement comes as the company prepares for what is expected to be a demanding cooling season. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is forecasting above-normal temperatures across the Mid-Atlantic this summer, and the regional grid operator, PJM Interconnection, has warned in its May 7 summer outlook of tightening operating reserve margins as electricity demand outpaces new supply. Homeowners are also facing higher energy costs: in January, Dominion Energy raised its base rates for the first time since 1992, a change expected to add about 9% to the typical residential bill over two years.
In response, Robert B. Payne is expanding early-season tune-up availability and reminding customers that a well-maintained system runs more efficiently, costs less to operate, and is far less likely to fail during a heat wave — when service demand is at its highest.

- Book a tune-up before the heat sets in. It catches small problems early, before they turn into a breakdown on the hottest day of the year, when service is hardest to get.
- Change the air filter on schedule. A dirty filter makes the system work harder and runs up the bill.
- Set the thermostat back when no one is home. A programmable or smart thermostat trims your bill and eases the late-afternoon strain on the grid.
- Watch for early warning signs. Weak airflow, odd noises, or a unit that runs nonstop without cooling all mean it’s time to call.
