Reddit is developing a new video experience that would let users watch videos from the platform and listen to spoken versions of posts in the background. Chief executive Steve Huffman said during the company’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call that Reddit expects to make an early version available for testing later this year.
The planned format follows the popularity of videos that narrate Reddit stories on other platforms. On TikTok, about 19.6 million posts carry the #reddit hashtag, while another 9.9 million use #redditstories.
Reddit Posts Could Become Audio Content
Many of these TikTok videos use text-to-speech narration to read popular Reddit posts while unrelated footage plays in the background. The accompanying clips often feature gameplay, cooking or other visually active content.
Huffman described the format as a type of podcast in which people read Reddit content aloud. He said a spoken version of Reddit could be engaging and would represent a different content format for the platform.
Reddit has not explained how the video and listening experience will appear within its main app. The feature remains under development, with testing expected to begin before the end of 2026, according to TechCrunch.
Short Video Feeds Spread Across Major Apps
Several social and entertainment services have recently introduced or tested vertically scrolling video feeds. Facebook plans to test an experience that opens directly into full-screen video for some users later this year.
Netflix, Disney+, Peacock and HBO Max have also added short-form video feeds in recent months. Amazon offers a similar feed for shopping content, while LinkedIn has introduced one for professional videos.
Reddit has offered video content for years, but the planned experience would combine viewing with background listening. It would also give the company a way to host a format already built around stories originally posted by its users.
Video Comments Gain Early Usage
Reddit also discussed the early performance of video comments, which became available to users on June 11. The feature lets people record or upload video replies in eligible public, suitable-for-work communities, although the videos do not play automatically.
Video comments already represent more than 10% of all video posts on Reddit, Huffman said during the earnings call. Reddit’s official announcement said the format expands existing comment options that include text, images and GIFs.
