Apple is reportedly in talks with publishers about paying for access to their content as it prepares to launch a more capable version of Siri later this year. The company wants Siri AI to use current news and information from publishers while compensating them when their material contributes to responses.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has approached publishers in recent months and discussed a compensation system based on actual content usage rather than a fixed licensing fee. The company has considered spending a nine-figure amount on the agreements.
Apple has not publicly confirmed the negotiations. The reported model differs from many existing AI licensing agreements, where technology companies pay publishers guaranteed fees for broader access to their archives or ongoing content feeds.
Siri AI Will Rely More Heavily on Current Information
Apple announced Siri AI in June as part of the next generation of Apple Intelligence. The assistant is designed to understand personal context, work across apps, interpret information visible on a user’s screen, and search the web for current information.
That increased reliance on current information helps explain Apple’s interest in publisher agreements. Access to licensed reporting could provide Siri with more recent material when users ask about news or other topics that change frequently.
Apple’s official Apple Intelligence page says Siri AI will also be able to take actions across apps such as Messages, Music, and Reminders. The company has positioned the redesigned assistant as a central part of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, and its wider AI plans.
Apple Considers Usage-Based Publisher Payments
Under the model being discussed, publishers would receive compensation when their content is actually used rather than receiving one fixed payment for general access. The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple has been discussing multiyear agreements and could allocate hundreds of millions of dollars to the program.
Apple already has relationships with publishers through services such as Apple News+, and it has previously negotiated access to media content for AI development. The latest discussions would focus more directly on supplying timely information to Siri.
The talks come as publishers continue negotiating how their reporting should be used by generative AI services. Some media groups have signed licensing agreements with AI companies, while others have pursued legal or regulatory action over the use of their content without compensation.
Siri AI is expected to reach users later in 2026. Apple has not said which publishers may participate in the proposed program or when any content agreements could be finalized.
