Spotify Adds Playlist Notes and Editor Profiles to Make Recommendations More Personal

Spotify has launched Playlist Notes, a feature that lets users attach personal comments to songs, podcast episodes, and audiobooks inside playlists they own or help manage. The update extends Spotify’s recently introduced User Notes feature, which allows listeners to add notes to individual tracks.

Spotify announced Playlist Notes on Monday. Users can add context about why an item belongs in a playlist, such as a memory connected to a song or a reason they think others should hear it.

To add a note, users open a playlist in Spotify’s mobile app, tap the three-dot menu beside a song, podcast episode, or audiobook, select “add note,” and save it. Anyone who can view the playlist will also be able to see the attached note.

Spotify Editors Can Now Explain Their Picks

Spotify is also adding notes to some of its editorial playlists. Editors can use them to explain why particular songs were selected for playlists such as Today’s Top Hits, RapCaviar, Hot Country, All New Pop, and Fresh Finds Hip-Hop.

The company is introducing Editor Profiles alongside the notes. These profiles show an editor’s top tracks and albums, as well as the playlists they help curate.

Spotify says the additions are intended to give listeners more context about the people behind its editorial recommendations. The feature also gives editors a way to explain individual selections without changing the playlist itself.

The Features Are Rolling Out Across Multiple Markets

User-created Playlist Notes are rolling out on iOS and Android in more than 100 markets. Editor notes and profiles are being released to free and Premium users aged 16 and older in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

The launch follows Spotify’s introduction of User Notes in July. Both features add more user-written context to music and other audio content inside the app.

Spotify has also been expanding social and personalization features as it competes with services including Apple Music and YouTube Music. The company recently reported that it had passed 300 million subscribers for the first time and reached 777 million monthly active users.
