Meta has introduced a new tool that allows AI agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging on behalf of businesses. The feature is designed to simplify a process that previously required developers to move between multiple Meta platforms, documentation pages, and technical tools to configure business messaging services.
The company announced the update through its official developer blog alongside its broader expansion of AI-focused subscription offerings. The new capability is built around WhatsApp Business, Meta’s platform that enables companies to communicate with customers through WhatsApp conversations.
New MCP Server Connects AI Agents To WhatsApp Business
The feature is powered by a new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that connects AI coding assistants directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Compatible AI agents include Claude, Cursor, Codex, and ChatGPT. Instead of manually navigating through Meta’s Developer Console, Business Manager, API documentation, and code editors, businesses can now describe what they want through a conversation with an AI agent.
The agent can then perform much of the setup process automatically.
AI Agents Handle Setup And Configuration Tasks
According to Meta, the AI agent can create a WhatsApp Business account, add and verify phone numbers, register accounts for Cloud API access, review Terms of Service requirements, and complete other onboarding tasks.
The company said the new MCP server is intended to reduce the operational work involved in getting businesses connected to WhatsApp’s messaging infrastructure.
Meta has already introduced other MCP servers for managing advertising systems, app configurations, and social technologies. The WhatsApp Business Tools MCP expands that lineup with a service focused specifically on business messaging.
Additional Tools For Templates And Monitoring
Beyond account setup, businesses can use AI agents to create and edit messaging templates. Users can describe the type of message they want, and the AI agent can generate the template or modify an existing one.
The system also supports testing messages and webhooks while monitoring potential issues that may otherwise go unnoticed. These include expired Terms of Service agreements, payment method problems, and business verification requirements.
Meta said businesses can also use its Meta Social Technologies MCP server during setup to discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot technical errors.
Part Of A Growing MCP Ecosystem
Meta joins a growing list of technology companies offering MCP servers that allow AI agents to interact securely with their services. Other companies providing similar infrastructure include PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, and Salesforce.
The approach reflects broader efforts across the technology industry to make software platforms more accessible to AI agents that can perform tasks, manage configurations, and automate workflows on behalf of users.
