Tressfecta Develops Automated Hair Preparation Tool to Reduce Braiding Time

Beauty technology startup Tressfecta is developing Plait Pilot, a hardware device designed to automate the time-consuming process of separating hair extensions before braiding. Founded by 24-year-old Aisata Diallo, the company aims to reduce the physical strain experienced by professional braiders while making the preparation process more efficient.

The startup was selected for TechCrunch Disrupt 2026’s Startup Battlefield 200 program in San Francisco, where Diallo introduced her approach to developing technology for textured hair. Tressfecta remains in its prelaunch stage, with the first prototype under development and plans to conduct testing with professional stylists.

How Plait Pilot Automates Hair Preparation

Plait Pilot is designed to separate packaged braiding hair into predetermined portions before a stylist begins working. Users place hair extensions on the device, select the desired section size, and allow the machine to divide and dispense the prepared pieces.

The device aims to eliminate repetitive preparation work that can take several hours, particularly when clients request hairstyles requiring numerous small braids. Professional braiding sessions can last up to eight hours, with stylists often experiencing hand cramps, wrist discomfort, and repetitive strain from extended periods of manual work.

Diallo explained that developing the technology presents engineering challenges because different hair types require different handling methods. Hair length, density, and texture must be considered when designing a mechanism capable of separating extensions accurately.

Rather than automating the entire braiding process, Tressfecta is focusing initially on preparation tasks that can be performed mechanically. The approach is intended to allow stylists to concentrate on braiding while reducing the time spent manually dividing hair.

Founder Draws on Experience as Professional Braider

Diallo began braiding her own hair while growing up and later provided braiding services to other people during her studies at Northeastern University in Boston. She started a small business after noticing limited access to professional braiders and textured-hair specialists around the university.

Through that experience, she became familiar with the physical demands and preparation work involved in professional styling. The strain eventually led her to stop offering braiding services, prompting her to consider whether technology could address some of the difficulties.

In 2025, Diallo developed the concept for Tressfecta, a company focused on creating tools for textured-hair care and styling. Plait Pilot became its first project, targeting a specific task that currently depends heavily on manual labor.

Tressfecta Prepares for Fundraising and Product Testing

Tressfecta is currently self-funded, with additional financial support from grants and accelerator programs. Diallo is preparing to raise external investment to continue developing the prototype and support future product development.

The company is also building relationships with professional braiders and hairstylists who can provide feedback and participate in testing. Its official website invites interested professionals to join a community supporting the development of automated hair preparation technology.

No commercial release date or pricing has been announced for Plait Pilot. The startup’s immediate priorities include refining the prototype, gathering feedback from stylists, and securing funding for further development.
