Meta’s Muse AI App Surpasses 10 Million US Downloads in 40 Days

Meta has recorded more than 10 million US downloads of its Muse AI companion app within 40 days of launch, becoming only the 12th mobile application to reach that milestone. According to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, Muse accumulated 10.9 million downloads globally since its September debut, including 10.2 million in the United States.

The achievement places Muse alongside applications such as Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, Pokémon GO, Disney+, and Meta’s Threads. Sensor Tower senior insights analyst Kara Lee said only 11 other apps had reached 10 million US downloads within their first 40 days, with Threads being the most recent in July 2023.

Meta’s Advertising Push Supports Muse Downloads

Muse, launched on September 8, is a personal AI agent designed to complete tasks, organize projects, and assist users with everyday activities. The application is currently available in the United States and Canada.

Meta has promoted Muse across its existing platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, which collectively contribute to its family of applications serving 3.6 billion daily active users. The company has also substantially increased its advertising expenditure to attract new users.

According to Sensor Tower, Muse accounted for 39% of Meta’s total advertising spending in October, compared with 23% in September. The application also climbed from 73rd to 21st among US brands ranked by advertising impressions during the same period.

Meta previously used a similar promotional approach for Threads, which benefited from Instagram’s existing user network and integration with Facebook. Muse’s launch combines advertising campaigns with promotion across Meta’s established services.

Muse Records Higher Retention Than Competing AI Apps

Sensor Tower data indicates that Muse retained 30% of US users seven days after installation and 23% after 14 days. By comparison, competing AI applications, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok, averaged 19% retention after seven days and 16% after 14 days.

Muse also reached 2.5 million daily active users on October 16, representing a 15% increase from the previous week. The application has remained near the top of US mobile app rankings since its launch.

During their respective first 40 days, ChatGPT recorded 3.7 million US downloads, while Grok and Claude reached approximately 500,000 and 200,000 downloads. However, ChatGPT led in worldwide installations, accumulating approximately 15 million downloads over the same period.

The global comparison reflects differences in geographic availability, as ChatGPT launched across additional markets while Muse remains limited to North America. Japan alone accounted for approximately 25% of ChatGPT’s worldwide installations during its first 40 days.

Muse has held the No. 1 position on Apple’s US App Store for nearly every day since launching, briefly falling behind streaming application Kick on October 19. It reclaimed the top position on October 20 and has also ranked first on Google Play over the preceding 30 days.
