OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio to Expand AI Tools for Drug Discovery and Development

OpenAI has acquired AI biotechnology startup Orchestra Bio to expand its Rosalind platform, which helps life sciences researchers conduct experiments, analyze scientific data, and manage drug development. The acquisition brings Orchestra’s AI agents and development team into OpenAI, allowing the company to combine scientific research tools with software that coordinates pharmaceutical operations.

The acquisition announced on October 20, 2026 did not disclose financial terms. Founded in 2022, Orchestra Bio reportedly raised approximately $20 million by 2025 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria, and 8VC.

Orchestra Bio Develops AI Agents for Drug Development

Orchestra Bio develops AI agents that help pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies coordinate the operational requirements of drug development. Its software supports activities including financial tracking, clinical trial scheduling, research monitoring, and coordination between internal teams and external partners.

The platform allows scientists and project managers to delegate routine monitoring tasks to AI agents while retaining responsibility for important decisions. These agents can identify potential scheduling conflicts, monitor research progress, and recommend adjustments when unexpected problems arise.

For example, a failed manufacturing batch could delay a planned clinical trial and affect several connected activities. Orchestra’s AI agents can identify the affected schedules, collect relevant information, and compare possible responses for project managers to consider.

According to OpenAI, developing a new medicine typically takes between 10 and 15 years in the United States, from identifying a biological target to receiving regulatory approval. The company said coordinating scientific research, manufacturing, and clinical development remains difficult because teams often rely on disconnected software systems.

OpenAI Integrates Orchestra Technology Into Rosalind

OpenAI plans to integrate Orchestra’s technology into Rosalind, its AI platform designed specifically for life sciences research. The platform includes GPT-Rosalind, a specialized AI model that helps researchers investigate questions involving biology and chemistry.

Rosalind Workbench connects the model with scientific software and research data, allowing scientists to plan experiments, analyze results, and evaluate potential drug candidates. Orchestra’s technology will add operational capabilities that connect research findings with subsequent development activities.

OpenAI said the combined system is intended to help research teams coordinate decisions and manage the steps required to advance potential treatments. The company has not disclosed when Orchestra’s capabilities will become available within Rosalind or whether its existing products will continue operating separately.

OpenAI Works With Moderna and Novo Nordisk

OpenAI has already established relationships with pharmaceutical companies including Moderna and Novo Nordisk through its life sciences initiatives. At Moderna, AI tools help researchers translate complex scientific data into experimental workflows.

Its partnership with Novo Nordisk focuses on applying AI to research and development activities while maintaining oversight of pharmaceutical operations. OpenAI said Orchestra’s technology could support these efforts by connecting scientific findings with project schedules, operational decisions, and development requirements.
