OpenAI Welcomes Former NSA Head Paul M. Nakasone to Its Board

OpenAI has expanded its board by appointing Paul M. Nakasone, a distinguished retired U.S. Army general and former director of the National Security Agency, as its latest member. Nakasone, renowned for his extensive tenure as the leader of the U.S. Cyber Command and chief of the Central Security Service, brings a wealth of experience in cybersecurity to the forefront of OpenAI’s operations.

In its official announcement on Thursday, OpenAI emphasized Nakasone’s potential contributions to enhancing AI-driven cybersecurity measures. His role will include participation in OpenAI’s new Safety and Security Committee, which is currently undertaking a 90-day evaluation of the company’s safety protocols and procedures. This initiative aims to refine OpenAI’s security strategies and communicate these developments to the public.

Nakasone’s appointment coincides with OpenAI’s strategic expansion of its leadership team and board, which now includes notable figures such as Adam D’Angelo, Larry Summers, Bret Taylor, and Sam Altman. New additions announced in March include Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Nicole Seligman, former global general counsel of Sony; and Fidji Simo, CEO of Instacart.

The bolstering of OpenAI’s leadership team comes at a pivotal time, as the company faces intense competition in the rapidly growing field of generative artificial intelligence. Despite being in a phase of accelerated growth initiated by the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, OpenAI has encountered challenges, including controversies and high-profile departures.

Moreover, on Monday, OpenAI announced the hiring of two top executives, Sarah Friar and Kevin Weil. Friar, the new chief financial officer and former CEO of Nextdoor, is tasked with scaling the financial strategies to support OpenAI’s expansive research agenda and customer base. Kevin Weil, joining as chief product officer, brings experience from Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and will focus on translating OpenAI’s research into products and services that cater to consumers, developers, and businesses.

Additionally, a significant partnership with Apple was unveiled, featuring a ChatGPT integration with Siri, marking a significant step in OpenAI’s collaboration with leading technology firms.
