Trump Campaign Challenges Harris’ Claim to Biden’s Campaign Funds

The campaign of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has lodged a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), contesting the legality of Vice President Kamala Harris assuming control of the funds accumulated by President Joe Biden for his reelection efforts. This legal challenge emerged shortly after Biden, aged 81 and a Democrat, discontinued his campaign and endorsed Harris, who swiftly assumed leadership of the financial assets.

Transition of Campaign Leadership

After Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race, Harris quickly took the reins of Biden’s campaign finances. By the following Monday, Harris had secured the nomination by garnering support from a majority of delegates set to vote at the upcoming party convention. This rapid transition left the Biden campaign with approximately $95 million in funds by the end of June, all of which Harris now controls.

David Warrington, the general counsel for the Trump campaign, described Harris’ action as a “brazen money grab” in the FEC filing. This complaint, which was disclosed to Reuters, claims that Harris is committing what could be considered “the largest campaign finance violation in American history.”

Saurav Ghosh, a lawyer with the Campaign Legal Center, a non-partisan watchdog, argues that Harris’ claim to the funds is legitimate given her role as the vice presidential candidate under the “Biden for President” banner. The FEC, however, has stated that it cannot comment on the matter as it remains unresolved and is unlikely to be settled before the presidential election on November 5.

Harris Campaign’s Financial Milestone

In the days following Biden’s endorsement, the Harris campaign reported a remarkable fundraising achievement, collecting over $100 million and surpassing the amount left in Biden’s campaign coffers. This swift accumulation of resources underscores the campaign’s strong financial momentum.

The Harris campaign dismissed the Trump campaign’s FEC complaint as a baseless legal challenge. Charles Kretchmer Lutvak, a spokesperson for Harris, criticized the Republicans for what he perceives as repeated attempts to undermine Democratic efforts through legal maneuvers aimed at vote suppression and election interference. He stated, “Republicans may be jealous that Democrats are energized to defeat Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, but baseless legal claims will only distract them while we sign up volunteers, talk to voters, and win this election.”
