Typo on AMD Ryzen 9000 Processors Causes Recall

AMD has delayed the launch of its Ryzen 9000 series CPUs, initially scheduled for July 31, because of a surprising issue—a typo on the chips themselves. The mislabelling involves the Ryzen 7 9700X being mistakenly labeled as Ryzen 9 9700X. This error, confirmed by a leaked image shared on social media platform X by leaker HXL, has caused AMD to recall the affected CPUs from retailers and PC manufacturers.

Leaked Image Reveals Typo on AMD Ryzen Chips

This mistake isn’t limited to just one model. According to reports from Tom’s Hardware and an early review on Bilibili, the Ryzen 5 9600X chips have also been mislabeled as Ryzen 9 models. The Ryzen 9 designation is reserved for high-end chips in the Zen 5 family, such as the Ryzen 9 9950X and 9900X.

Ian Cutress, formerly of Anandtech, also highlighted this issue on X, supporting HXL’s initial post. The recall is attributed to this large-scale typo, causing a delay in the release schedule. The Ryzen 5 and 7 models are now set for release on August 8, with the Ryzen 9 models following on August 15.

This incident is unusual and has led to speculation about the root cause. While AMD has not officially confirmed the exact reason for the recall, the company stated that the chips “did not meet our full quality expectations.” The mislabelling could be a part of this explanation, but the lack of an official detailed statement has left room for doubt. AMD’s communication hints at a broader quality issue, indicating that there might be more to the recall than just a typographical error. The statement suggests a precautionary measure to maintain high-quality experiences for Ryzen users.

This situation raises questions about whether the issue is solely a simple mistake or if there are more serious concerns with the Ryzen 9000 CPUs. As of now, the tech community is waiting for further clarification from AMD.
