Ryzen Desktop CPUs See Improved Gaming with New Windows 11 Patch

A recent Windows 11 update has brought enhanced gaming performance for owners of modern Ryzen desktop CPUs. Initially planned for the upcoming 24H2 version of Windows 11, AMD and Microsoft’s collaborative optimization patch has now been backported to the current 23H2 version. This patch specifically targets performance improvements in a range of Ryzen CPUs, including popular models like the Ryzen 7800X3D.

AMD confirmed that users looking to benefit from this performance boost should search for the KB5041587 update within the Windows Update section under Advanced options and then Optional updates. The company stated that performance gains with the KB5041587 update installed on version 23H2 are expected to be nearly identical to those seen with the forthcoming 24H2 update.

Initial tests by reviewers, who have started evaluating the 24H2 update, demonstrate an average gaming performance improvement of 10% at 1080p resolution on an older Ryzen 7700X CPU. Meanwhile, tests conducted by Hardware Unboxed on the newer Ryzen 9700X indicate an average 11% performance improvement. These results underscore the effectiveness of the optimization efforts by AMD and Microsoft, focusing on AMD-specific branch prediction code within Windows 11.

Earlier benchmark results for AMD’s latest Zen 5 desktop CPUs had shown underwhelming performance, prompting this collaborative effort between AMD and Microsoft to enhance Ryzen CPU performance through software optimization. The backporting of this update to Windows 11 version 23H2 means users no longer need to participate in Release Preview testing to access these improvements.
