Elon Musk’s Grok Releases Seven-Minute AI Odyssey After Promising Full-Length Film

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has released a seven-minute adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, three months after the billionaire announced plans to produce a full-length, historically accurate film using artificial intelligence. Published on October 23, 2026, the video is labeled as the first episode of an AI-generated series rather than the completed movie Musk originally promised.

The project was created using Grok Imagine, the AI image and video generation tool developed by xAI, in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. The official announcement on X identifies the footage as Episode 1 of the Odyssey series, without specifying how many installments are planned or when additional episodes will be released.

Grok’s First Episode Falls Short of Original Film Plans

Musk announced in July that Grok Imagine would produce a feature-length adaptation of the ancient Greek epic before the end of 2026. He described the proposed film as historically accurate and faithful to Homer’s original work.

The first episode features a narrated introduction before transitioning into scenes involving characters from the Greek epic. The footage depicts maritime journeys, ancient settings and conversations between characters, with dialogue delivered in English rather than ancient Greek.

Although some sequences present realistic environments and human figures, reviewers have criticized the production’s pacing, dialogue and character performances. TechCrunch described the footage as visually convincing in certain moments but questioned its ability to sustain viewer interest across a longer narrative.

Musk’s Project Follows Criticism of Christopher Nolan’s Adaptation

Musk’s announcement followed his public criticism of director Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey. He objected to casting decisions involving nonwhite and transgender performers, including Lupita Nyong’o and Elliot Page.

Nolan’s film, released in July 2026, was produced using a combination of practical filmmaking techniques and visual effects. Production involved thousands of cast and crew members across six countries, with the nearly three-hour film subsequently achieving major box-office success and sustained demand for IMAX screenings.

Nolan has previously described himself as skeptical of emerging technologies and expressed concerns about public attitudes toward artificial intelligence. Musk, meanwhile, has promoted AI-generated media and frequently shared videos created using generative AI systems.

Full-Length AI Film Remains Unreleased

The seven-minute episode represents the first publicly released installment of Musk’s proposed adaptation, but xAI has not confirmed whether the series will eventually be assembled into a feature-length film. The company has also not disclosed production costs, the extent of human involvement or a schedule for subsequent releases.

The original commitment to deliver a completed movie by the end of 2026 remains unfulfilled as of October 27. Grok Imagine’s release announcement invited viewers to request additional information about how the episode was produced.
