Rivian Spinoff Also Partners With DoorDash To Develop Autonomous Delivery Vehicles

Micromobility startup Also has entered a partnership with DoorDash to develop autonomous delivery vehicles, as part of a broader push into last-mile logistics technology.

The agreement includes DoorDash’s participation in Also’s $200 million Series C funding round, led by Greenoaks Capital. DoorDash will also take a seat on Also’s board.

Funding And Valuation Milestone

The latest funding brings Also’s total capital raised to $505 million and values the company at more than $1 billion. The startup previously launched with a $105 million investment from Eclipse.

Also originated as an internal project at Rivian in 2022 before being spun out as an independent company.

Product Development And Design Origins

Initially focused on electric bikes, Also collaborated with LoveFrom on early designs. Its current product lineup includes a high-end electric bike and concepts for compact delivery vehicles.

The company has developed small, pedal-assisted vehicles capable of carrying more than 400 pounds while remaining narrow enough for bike lane use. Amazon, an investor in Rivian, has already ordered thousands of these vehicles.

Shift Toward Autonomous Delivery

The partnership with DoorDash signals plans to introduce autonomous versions of these delivery vehicles. It is the first indication that Also will integrate self-driving capabilities into its platform.

It remains unclear whether Also will use Rivian’s in-house autonomy technology or rely on DoorDash’s systems.

Autonomy Technology And Integration Options

Rivian has been developing autonomous driving systems using a combination of cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors, and lidar, along with custom-built computing hardware.

DoorDash has also been working on autonomous delivery through its own robot vehicle, known as Dot, which uses lidar, radar, and camera sensors. The vehicle is currently operating in the Metro Phoenix area and can travel at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour.

The companies have not disclosed which technology stack will be used in the collaboration.

Future Development And Expansion

Also and Rivian have indicated that the startup may leverage Rivian’s manufacturing capabilities, retail network, and technology infrastructure.

The partnership reflects growing interest in combining micromobility platforms with autonomous systems to support urban delivery operations.
