Google Expands Vids With AI Avatars Veo 3.1 And Direct YouTube Export

Google has introduced a set of new features to its video editor app Vids, adding avatar control through text prompts, support for its Veo 3.1 video-generation model, direct export to YouTube, and a Chrome extension for screen recording. The updates expand the app’s AI-driven editing tools as Google continues to build out Vids for enterprise content creation.

Text Prompts Enable Avatar Direction And Customization

Users can now direct AI avatars using natural language prompts, allowing characters to act within a scene. This includes interacting with products, props, or equipment. Google said the system maintains character consistency even as users generate dynamic outputs.

The update also allows users to customize avatars based on a video’s theme. Through prompts, users can adjust appearance, change clothing, and create new backgrounds, giving more control over visual elements without manual editing.

Veo 3.1 Adds AI Video Generation Within The Editor

Google is integrating its Veo 3.1 model into Vids, enabling users to generate eight-second video clips directly within the editing tool. The company is offering 10 free generations per month to all users. Accounts under Google AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra can generate up to 1,000 Veo videos per month.

This builds on earlier updates. Last month, Google added its Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro music generation models to Vids, allowing users to create sound effects and music for their clips.

Direct YouTube Export And Chrome Recording Added

Vids now supports exporting finished videos directly to YouTube. Exported videos are set to private by default, allowing users to review content before publishing. This removes the need to download and manually upload files.

Google has also introduced a Chrome extension for screen recording. The tool allows users to capture their screen with audio or video as part of the video creation workflow.

Ongoing Updates As Competition Increases

Google first introduced Vids in 2024 and has continued adding features since launch. The company expanded access to consumers and introduced AI avatars last year. In February, it added 2D and 3D cartoon-style avatars along with voice-over support in seven additional languages, including French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Japanese.

Vids operates in a competitive market alongside platforms such as Synthesia, HeyGen, D-ID, and Lemon Slice.
