A new AI model called Ox Alpha has appeared on OpenRouter without a disclosed developer, prompting widespread speculation over which company built it. The free model launched Thursday and is described as a reasoning system designed for coding, long-running agentic work, and production workloads.
OpenRouter lists Ox Alpha as a “stealth model” developed and operated by a third-party provider that has chosen to remain anonymous during the preview.
Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, whose company is acquiring OpenRouter, described the model as “very impressive” in a post on X.
Speculation Has Focused on Chinese and U.S. AI Labs
Much of the discussion has centered on whether Ox Alpha could come from a Chinese AI company.
AI analyst Andrew Curran said early speculation pointed toward GLM models developed by Z.ai, although confidence in that theory quickly weakened as more people tested the model.
Wccftech initially reported that available clues appeared to point toward an unreleased GLM model. The publication later updated its report to suggest Ox Alpha could instead be an unreleased version of Microsoft’s MAI model.
Reddit users have reached similarly conflicting conclusions. Some posts argue that the model is unlikely to be Chinese, while others claim there is strong evidence that it is.
No company has publicly claimed ownership of Ox Alpha.
OpenRouter Is Hosting the Model as an Anonymous Preview
OpenRouter allows developers to access and compare AI models through a common interface, including models from major providers and smaller labs.
Ox Alpha’s anonymous listing makes it unusual because users can test the system without knowing which company trained or operates it.
The model is currently available for free through OpenRouter. Its listing does not disclose training details, model size, architecture, or the identity of the provider.
Until the developer identifies itself or OpenRouter releases more information, the model’s origin remains unconfirmed.
