Amazon has announced a pay increase for its U.S. core operations workforce, raising the minimum starting wage for eligible employees to $20 per hour. The move affects workers in roles such as fulfillment centers and delivery operations and represents a $1-per-hour increase for qualifying employees.
The company also said its average hourly pay for these workers will rise to nearly $24 per hour.
Expanded Compensation And Benefits
In a post on the Amazon About site, Amazon Senior Vice President Udit Madan said the company’s average total compensation exceeds $32 per hour when benefits are included.
Amazon stated that the wage increase represents an investment of more than $1.5 billion in its workforce. The company continues to position compensation and benefits as a key part of its employee retention and recruitment strategy.
New Banking And Grocery Perks
Alongside the pay increase, Amazon is introducing several new employee benefits.
Workers will gain access to Day 1 Financial, a low-cost banking service, and membership in First Tech Federal Credit Union. The company is also expanding grocery-related benefits through its ownership of Whole Foods Market.
Employees will receive a 20% discount on purchases made in Whole Foods stores and a 10% discount on grocery orders placed through Amazon’s online platforms.
Existing Benefits Remain In Place
The new perks are being added to Amazon’s existing employee benefits package, which already includes free Prime memberships, prepaid education programs, and healthcare coverage for eligible workers.
Amazon has regularly increased wages and expanded benefits over the past several years as competition for warehouse and logistics workers has intensified across the retail and e-commerce sectors.
Mixed Employee Reactions
The announcement has received a mixed response from some workers online.
On a Reddit forum dedicated to Amazon fulfillment center employees, several commenters questioned the practical value of the Whole Foods discount, noting the grocery chain’s reputation for higher prices compared with traditional supermarkets.
Despite those reactions, the latest wage increase reinforces Amazon’s efforts to maintain a competitive compensation package for its large U.S. operations workforce.
