Re:Build Plans to Expand Manufacturing Capacity and Employment

Founded in 2020 by Jeff Wilke, Miles Arnone and William Barker, Re:Build works with industrial businesses to develop, engineer and manufacture products in the United States. Its operations combine manufacturing partnerships with the creation of startups targeting sectors where domestic production capabilities remain limited.

Re:Build says its network of businesses employs more than 2,100 people across the United States and operates over 2.4 million square feet of manufacturing facilities. The company also claims to have developed hundreds of products and production systems, including domestically manufactured unmanned aircraft.

The company uses a proprietary Manufacturing Constrained Design process that incorporates production requirements into early product development. Re:Build CEO Miles Arnone said involving manufacturers during the design phase helps businesses manage production costs and product quality before manufacturing begins.

Wilke, a former Amazon executive, said the company was established to address the economic and national security challenges associated with declining US industrial capacity. General Catalyst CEO Hemant Taneja similarly emphasized the need to strengthen domestic production and compete with China’s established manufacturing infrastructure.

Slate Auto Among Startups Developed by Re:Build

Re:Build previously incubated electric vehicle startup Slate Auto, which Wilke and Arnone conceived in 2022 before spinning it out as an independent company in 2023. Slate is developing an affordable, customizable electric pickup truck and has raised at least $1.4 billion, including investment from Jeff Bezos’ family office.

Other businesses developed within Re:Build’s ecosystem include Neon Aero and Ensorcell. These companies receive access to manufacturing capabilities and capital intended to help them establish commercial production.

Re:Build also maintains connections to Amazon through several senior executives, including Wilke and chief digital and product officer Wei Gao, a former Amazon vice president and technical adviser to Bezos.

JPMorganChase’s investment was made through its Strategic Investment Group, which oversees direct equity investments under the bank’s Security and Resiliency Initiative. The company did not disclose additional investors or provide a detailed allocation of the new funding across its manufacturing facilities and startup investments.
