Honda Prologue Exit Adds to Shrinking US Electric Vehicle Lineup

Honda will end US sales of the Prologue after the 2026 model year, leaving the automaker without an all-electric vehicle in its American portfolio. The decision joins a series of cancellations and withdrawals as manufacturers respond to weaker demand, tariffs, regulatory restrictions and changing investment priorities.

The Prologue entered the US market in 2024 through a partnership with General Motors, which builds the SUV in Mexico on the same platform as the Chevrolet Blazer EV. Honda sold 33,017 units in 2024 and 39,194 in 2025, but first-half 2026 sales fell 49% from a year earlier to 8,407 vehicles.

Honda Scales Back Its EV Plans

Honda said Prologue sales would conclude after production of the 2026 model year. Existing owners will continue receiving service and support through the company’s dealer network.

The decision follows Honda’s March cancellation of three electric vehicles planned for North American production. In its official announcement, Honda attributed the cancellations to changes in the business environment as it reassessed its electrification plans.

The cancelled vehicles included two Honda 0 Series models and an Acura SUV. Sony Honda Mobility also ended plans for its two Afeela vehicles before either entered production.

Other Automakers Reduce US Offerings

Hyundai stopped selling the standard Ioniq 6 in the US while retaining its higher-performance N version. The company continues producing the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9 in Georgia, while the Ioniq 6 was imported from South Korea.

Nissan declined to introduce a 2026 Ariya, while Volkswagen ended US production of the ID.4 and paused the ID. Buzz until 2027. Volvo also withdrew the EX30 and EX30 Cross Country, though it continues offering the larger EX60 and EX90.

Polestar was effectively forced from the market by US restrictions covering connected-vehicle technology linked to China. The Geely-owned company said it would sell remaining inventory and continue supporting existing customers.

Tesla ended production of the Model S and Model X as it shifted factory space towards Optimus robots. Sales of both vehicles had declined as buyers increasingly chose the less expensive Model 3 and Model Y.

EV Sales Remain Below Last Year

US electric vehicle sales reached 247,226 units during the second quarter of 2026, according to Cox Automotive. That represented a 14.7% increase from the first quarter but a 20.5% decline from the same period in 2025.

EVs accounted for about 5.8% of new US vehicle sales during the quarter. The market had already recorded a 36% year-over-year decline in the fourth quarter of 2025 following the end of the $7,500 federal consumer tax credit.

New models are still entering the country, including the Rivian R2. However, the departures leave US buyers with fewer electric sedans, compact vehicles and lower-volume models than automakers had planned several years earlier.
