X has released a rebuilt version of its Android app after nearly a year of development. The company says the new app improves loading speeds, scrolling, notifications and overall reliability while giving its engineers a stronger base for future features.
The update is available globally through the Google Play Store. Existing users can receive the new version by updating the X app already installed on their Android devices.
X Rebuilds App From Scratch
X announced plans to overhaul its Android experience in August 2025, when product head Nikita Bier said the company was assembling an Android development team. The project followed years of performance problems that left the Android app behind its iOS version.
Some users previously encountered slow loading, unreliable notifications and difficulties opening posts through external links. X also recorded one of its strongest weeks for Android downloads in October 2025, giving the company another reason to prioritise the platform.
X’s engineering team said in its official release announcement that the app had been rebuilt from the ground up rather than updated through smaller changes. Bier described the work as one of the largest engineering projects completed in the company’s history.
“It’s faster, smoother and more reliable,” Bier said. He added that the rebuilt foundation would allow X to develop and release new functions more quickly.
Several Features Remain in Development
The first release still has limitations. X is working to improve performance on older Android devices and has not yet added support for Spaces, its live audio feature.
Other planned additions include a new video editor, video reactions, cashtags and custom timelines. X has not provided release dates for those functions.
The company has introduced several products in recent months, including X Money and the encrypted messaging service X Chat. Both have also been developed as standalone apps, while some related functions are being incorporated into X’s main social platform.
Android holds a large share of the smartphone market outside the United States, particularly across Asia, Africa and Latin America. The rebuilt app gives X an opportunity to improve its service for existing users and attract people who previously left because of technical problems.
X acknowledged that the app may still contain performance issues following its release. Development work will continue as the company adds missing functions and adjusts the app for a wider range of Android devices.
