Lunar Outpost Plans to Use Nvidia Jetson Chips on Moon Rover

Lunar Outpost plans to use Nvidia’s Jetson computing platform on an upcoming moon rover, potentially placing the first GPU on the lunar surface. The compact chip will process data from the rover’s lidar system, helping it map terrain, detect obstacles and make navigation decisions locally.

The Colorado-based company is comparing Jetson with its existing flight computer before committing more widely to GPU-powered systems. Chief Executive Justin Cyrus said the tests will assess how the newer hardware performs against equipment with more spaceflight experience.

Jetson Will Process Rover Sensor Data

Nvidia Jetson is designed for robots and other machines that must process sensor information with limited power. Running calculations on the rover reduces the need to send every image or lidar reading back to Earth before taking action.

Lunar Outpost currently combines conventional programmed controls with physical AI models. Cyrus said the company is assessing where AI can improve autonomy without replacing systems already tested for spaceflight.

The rover will travel aboard a lander built by Intuitive Machines. It is designed to carry sensors into craters and other areas that are difficult to examine from orbit.

A later mission will study Reiner Gamma, a lunar region known for its unusual magnetic field. Lunar Outpost previously developed a rover for that location under a NASA-supported programme, as detailed in its official mission announcement.

Extreme Conditions Create Hardware Risks

Operating a commercial GPU on the moon presents challenges not usually faced by terrestrial robots. The hardware must withstand cosmic radiation, major temperature changes and extended periods with limited solar power.

Lunar nights last about 14 Earth days and can expose equipment to extremely low temperatures. Cyrus said the system must survive those conditions while consuming very little electricity.

The company hopes stronger onboard computing will allow future rovers to work with less direction from Earth. Autonomous machines could inspect terrain, transport equipment and prepare infrastructure before astronauts arrive.

Nvidia Expands Its Space Computing Work

Nvidia is also working with Firefly Aerospace to place Jetson hardware aboard an Elytra spacecraft in lunar orbit. Firefly’s Ocula imaging service will use the processor to analyse moon imagery before sending selected data to Earth.

Nvidia said in its official announcement that the Firefly mission is targeted for late 2026. That project would operate Jetson in lunar orbit, while Lunar Outpost aims to test the platform directly on the surface.

Lunar Outpost is also developing Pegasus, a larger rover intended to carry astronauts and cargo. NASA selected the company to continue that work as part of its plans for sustained human operations on the moon.
