Meta is rolling out its Meta AI assistant inside Threads’ direct messages, giving users a private way to ask questions and discuss posts without leaving the app. The integration is becoming available globally from July 27.
Meta AI was already accessible through public Threads posts and replies in selected markets. The new DM option expands the assistant beyond public conversations and brings Threads closer to Meta’s other platforms, where Meta AI is available in Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Users Can Share Threads Content With Meta AI
Threads users can send posts, images, videos and links directly to Meta AI through the app’s messaging system. They can then ask questions about the shared material or continue the conversation with follow-up prompts.
The integration turns Threads posts into starting points for private research and recommendations. A user could share a post about a product, event or news story and ask Meta AI to explain it, provide additional context or suggest related information.
Threads introduced its own direct messaging system in July 2025. The platform has since added group chats, media sharing and wider message-request controls as Meta develops Threads into a more independent social network.
Public Meta AI Test Continues
Meta is continuing to test public interactions with @meta.ai in a limited number of markets. The feature allows users with public profiles to mention the assistant in posts and replies to request explanations or additional context.
The public test began in countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Mexico, Argentina and Saudi Arabia. Meta said it is reviewing feedback before making the public-feed experience more widely available.
Users who want fewer Meta AI responses in their feeds can mute the @meta.ai account, select “Not interested” on its posts or hide AI replies that appear beneath their own content. The DM integration is rolling out globally even though the public version remains limited to selected markets.
Meta Keeps AI Activity Within Its Apps
Meta AI is already integrated into messaging on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Adding it to Threads gives users another way to access the assistant without switching to services such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini.
The feature also positions Threads as more than a public posting platform. Users can now discover information in the feed, move a post into a private conversation and ask Meta AI for more detail within the same app.
