WhatsApp is rolling out audio and video calling through web browsers, allowing users to make and receive calls without installing its desktop application. The update brings the web version closer to WhatsApp’s mobile and native computer apps.
A new Calls tab will display call history and favourite contacts. WhatsApp Web will also support established calling tools such as screen sharing and reactions during calls.
Calls Can Move Between Devices
WhatsApp is adding the ability to transfer an active call between linked devices without disconnecting. A user who answers through a browser or computer can continue the same conversation on their phone.
The feature is intended to make calls more flexible when someone needs to leave their desk or switch to a device with a better camera, microphone or internet connection. WhatsApp already allows users to connect their accounts across multiple phones, computers and tablets.
Calls made through WhatsApp Web use the device’s internet connection rather than conventional phone minutes. WhatsApp says its personal calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
Waiting Rooms Add Controls to Group Calls
The company has also introduced waiting rooms for group calls created through a call link. Hosts can enable Require approval to join, placing participants in a waiting area until they are accepted.
Hosts can review people before admitting them and remove unwanted participants. The feature gives businesses, community groups and other organisers more control when sharing a call link with a wider audience.
WhatsApp supports group audio and video calls with up to 32 participants. Its calling tools also include shareable links and screen sharing for presentations or collaborative work.
Noise Suppression and Faster HD Video Arrive
A new noise-suppression setting filters background sounds in crowded or busy environments. Users can manage the feature through their in-call settings.
WhatsApp is also introducing QuickHD, which starts video calls in high definition during the first few seconds instead of gradually increasing the quality after the connection begins. The company said both features are rolling out gradually and will become available to all users.
The additions arrive as WhatsApp prepares to introduce usernames, which will let people connect without immediately sharing their phone numbers. Once available, usernames are also expected to support calling across WhatsApp’s platforms.
