Clinical Education, Community Health, and Cultural Experience
International Medical Aid offers structured global health and pre-health internships at its flagship program site in Mombasa, Kenya, and in additional international locations.
Developed by alumni of Johns Hopkins University, IMA’s programs serve premedical, pre-physician assistant, pre-nursing, pre-dental, mental health, and other pre-health students seeking clinical exposure and a broader understanding of healthcare delivery.
IMA programs bring together three central areas of experience:
- Clinical shadowing: Participants observe practicing physicians in departments such as internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, emergency medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology. These rotations introduce interns to healthcare delivery within Kenya’s medical system.
- Community health: Interns participate in initiatives that connect their clinical observations with public health needs in underserved communities.
- Cultural experience: Participants take part in cultural activities, educational excursions, and community events while living alongside a diverse group of peers at the IMA Residence.
The over 400 participant reviews frequently cite this combination of clinical observation, mentorship, public health education, and cultural engagement as a defining part of the IMA experience.
Recognition Built on Participant Experiences
IMA credits its students and alumni for making the latest GoAbroad recognition possible. Their reviews provide firsthand accounts of the program while helping future healthcare students understand what to expect from an international internship.
The recognition comes as IMA celebrates its most recent East Africa cohort. Participants completed clinical placements, contributed to community-based health initiatives, and took part in cultural experiences throughout Kenya.
Those experiences included events on Kenya’s Swahili coast and an educational trek to the Masai Mara Game Reserve, where interns encountered the region’s wildlife, landscapes, and cultural traditions.
