Fast Metals Raises $4.3 Million to Extract Critical Minerals From Red Mud

Fast Metals has raised $4.3 million to scale a chemical process that extracts iron, aluminium, titanium and rare-earth elements from red mud, a caustic waste produced during alumina refining. The startup has also signed its first commercial agreement to test the technology at a mineral-processing facility in Florida.

New Climate Ventures led the pre-seed round, with backing from Azolla Ventures, Humba Ventures, Astor Swiss and Rio Tinto through its mining technology accelerator with Founders Factory. The funding will support process improvements and additional commercial projects.

Red Mud Contains Valuable Minerals

More than three billion tonnes of red mud are stored in ponds and waste piles around the world. Its red colour comes mainly from iron oxide, but the material can also contain aluminium, titanium, gallium, scandium and rare-earth elements.

Separating those materials has historically been too expensive because valuable minerals are mixed with large quantities of iron oxide. Fast Metals says its hydrometallurgical process removes the iron first and recovers several saleable products across six processing stages.

Chief Executive and co-founder Sumedh Gostu developed much of the process through his doctoral research in extractive metallurgy. The company says the system uses another industrial waste stream from alumina refineries, along with other chemical inputs, to improve the economics of mineral recovery.

Fast Metals expects iron sales to cover much of the process’s operating costs. Higher-value materials such as titanium compounds, scandium oxide and rare-earth elements could then provide additional revenue.

Metalox Deal Will Test Commercial Economics

Under a strategic partnership with Metalox, Fast Metals will process about one tonne of red mud and other iron-rich waste each week at Metalox’s Florida facility.

The project is intended to validate recovery rates, operating costs and the quality of the resulting mineral products under commercial conditions. Fast Metals also said it has signed memoranda of understanding with trading partners that could purchase recovered materials.

The company’s model could give alumina refiners another way to manage existing waste while creating domestic sources of critical minerals. Fast Metals says its process can also use waste carbon dioxide and leave less residual material requiring long-term storage.

Its founders are now working to move the technology from laboratory and pilot testing into larger processing operations. The Metalox project is expected to begin later in 2026.
