OpenAI’s First Influencer Retreat Draws Backlash Over AI Concerns

OpenAI has faced online criticism after hosting its first reported influencer retreat at a luxury property in upstate New York. The event, called Summer Club, combined lessons about OpenAI products with farm-to-table meals, beekeeping, painting and other leisure activities.

A small group of creators shared videos from the weekend across TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn. Several posts received critical comments about AI’s environmental impact, OpenAI’s government work and the decision to promote the technology through a luxury retreat.

Creators Attend Product Classes and Wellness Activities

OpenAI said the event was intended to teach creators practical ways to use ChatGPT. Attendees participated in sessions about ChatGPT Work, which can assist with documents, presentations, research and repetitive tasks.

Some creators posted about building websites, while photographs showed activities including painting workshops and beekeeping. Other posts focused on the accommodation, meals and surrounding landscape rather than the products discussed during the sessions.

OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri told TechCrunch that creators are an important part of how people learn about the company’s products. He said the retreat gave attendees hands-on experience that they could share with their audiences.

Pusateri added that OpenAI welcomed debate about AI and would continue working with creators, traditional media and other marketing partners.

Online Comments Question the Event’s Timing

Some commenters asked attendees to address the energy and water used by AI data centres. Others criticised influencers for accepting luxury accommodation while promoting technology that remains the subject of public debate.

One creator received comments suggesting that she had compromised her values for a hotel stay. Another was asked whether she would produce a get-ready-with-me video about visiting a data centre.

A third creator appeared to remove a video that explicitly identified the gathering as an OpenAI event. Other posts from the retreat remained online without directly mentioning the company.

Criticism also referred to OpenAI’s growing data-centre investments and its $200 million agreement with the US Department of Defense. OpenAI has said the government programme supports administrative work, healthcare services, cybersecurity and other public-sector tasks.

OpenAI Expands Its Creator Marketing

OpenAI hired former Instagram executive Charles Porch as vice-president of global creative partnerships in February. Porch previously said he planned to speak with creative communities about their experiences with AI and how OpenAI could develop products for them.

Other AI companies have also worked with online creators. Anthropic has reportedly hosted a promotional dinner for Claude, while Microsoft organised a Copilot trip connected to the Super Bowl.

One attendee later wrote on LinkedIn that she expected audiences to be interested in practical ChatGPT advice and had not anticipated the level of opposition. OpenAI did not disclose whether attendees were paid, whether posting was required or how much the retreat cost.
