Lightspeed Expands Media Strategy With Investor and Creator Claire Zau

Lightspeed Venture Partners is expanding its media operations by combining venture investing with social content, podcasts and direct distribution. The firm hired investor and tech creator Claire Zau earlier this year to invest in early-stage companies while helping build its new media strategy.

Zau has built an audience of more than 350,000 followers across social platforms, including more than 100,000 on TikTok and over 250,000 on Instagram. Lightspeed describes her role as Partner & New Media, placing investing and content creation within the same position.

Lightwork Targets a Wider Tech Audience

Zau co-hosts Lightwork with Lightspeed chief marketing officer Josh Machiz. The weekly programme covers major developments in AI, technology and startup funding, alongside interviews with founders and investors.

Zau said part of the goal is to make technology and venture capital easier to understand for people who do not already work in the industry. That audience could include people simply interested in technology as well as entrepreneurs who may later seek funding.

Lightspeed also sees its media presence as another way to reach founders before they begin formal fundraising discussions. Machiz has said founders increasingly research venture firms through their podcasts, social channels and other content before deciding whom to approach.

Venture Firms Build Their Own Distribution

The strategy reflects a broader effort among venture firms to produce their own media rather than relying entirely on traditional publications to introduce portfolio companies and explain new technologies.

Machiz said fewer journalists and greater consolidation in media have made it harder for startups to attract coverage. Lightspeed therefore wants its own content operation to provide another channel through which founders and companies can tell their stories.

The firm has also built an in-house studio for Lightwork and other media projects. Machiz has described modern venture firms as increasingly operating like studios, with shows, events, research and distribution that portfolio companies can use alongside traditional investment support.

Social Media Gives Investors Direct Feedback

Lightspeed says the benefit also works in the other direction. Publishing investment and technology content online gives Zau direct feedback from audiences outside Silicon Valley.

She pointed to AI as one example. While investors may be enthusiastic about funding new AI companies, reactions to her social videos showed that younger audiences could be considerably more sceptical about the technology.

Zau said that feedback provides a real-time view of how people are actually responding to products and technology narratives. Lightspeed’s profile of Zau similarly says understanding public reactions makes her a better investor, while proximity to early-stage companies gives her content more substance.

Lightspeed plans to continue developing Lightwork and other media formats as it tries to become a destination where prospective founders can learn about technology, startups and venture capital before entering the ecosystem themselves.
