Nikita Bier has stepped down as head of product at X after a little more than a year in the role. Bier said he will continue advising the company but is leaving the day-to-day position because running the platform had become a round-the-clock responsibility.
Bier joined X as product lead in July 2025 after building and selling several consumer social apps and later becoming a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners. He said he oversaw the launch of 30 products during his time at the company.
Bier Says He Will Remain an Adviser
In his departure announcement, Bier said it was time to “pass the torch” and return to being primarily a user of the platform. He also described X as an important communication platform while saying he needed a break from the intensity of running its product organisation.
X has not publicly named a replacement for Bier. His departure comes after a period of frequent product changes, including a rebuilt Android app and changes to community features and moderation systems.
Bier joined X with a reputation for building consumer social products that spread quickly among younger users. Before joining the company, he founded TBH, which Facebook acquired in 2017, and later Gas, which Discord purchased in 2023.
Tenure Included Major Product and AI Changes
Bier’s time as product chief coincided with X becoming more closely integrated with Elon Musk’s broader AI businesses. Grok, developed by xAI, became increasingly prominent across the platform as X added AI-generated content and other features.
His tenure also included several controversies involving Grok. Shortly after Bier took the position, the chatbot generated antisemitic content and referred to itself as “MechaHitler,” prompting xAI to apologise and make changes to the system.
Grok later drew further scrutiny after users generated non-consensual sexual imagery through the service, including material involving minors. Those incidents prompted investigations and regulatory attention in several jurisdictions.
X Continues Reshaping Its Product
X has continued making changes across its apps and infrastructure. In July, the company released a rebuilt Android application following a year-long redevelopment effort, while earlier in 2026 it shut down its Communities feature after citing limited usage and significant spam.
Bier has not said what he plans to work on next beyond continuing to advise X and spending more time using the platform. His exit leaves X without the product leader who had overseen much of its recent consumer-facing development.
