TikTok Cuts 250 Jobs and Plans to Close Nashville Office

TikTok is laying off 250 employees and closing its Nashville office, which housed some members of its U.S. content-moderation operation. The office will close on October 5 as the company restructures parts of its U.S. business.

Zanna Crowley, a spokesperson for the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, said the changes are intended to streamline operations and align teams with the company’s longer-term plans. TikTok said it remains committed to maintaining a safe platform for its roughly 200 million U.S. users.

Nashville Office Opened in 2024

TikTok leased the Nashville office in 2024, and some employees working there handled content moderation. The company has not publicly detailed which other teams will be affected by the closure or whether any employees will be offered roles elsewhere.

The layoffs come as TikTok’s U.S. operations are being handled through the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, an entity established in January 2026. The venture is responsible for U.S. user data protection, algorithm security, content moderation and software assurance.

TikTok says the joint venture has decision-making authority over trust and safety policies for the U.S. platform. Other global TikTok entities continue to handle areas including advertising, e-commerce and some product interoperability.

AI Plays a Larger Role in Content Moderation

The cuts also come as social platforms increasingly use automated systems to identify spam, violent material and other content that violates their policies. TikTok has not said that AI directly caused the Nashville layoffs, so the staffing changes should not be treated as a confirmed replacement of human moderators with automated systems.

Content moderation remains one of the responsibilities specifically assigned to TikTok’s U.S. joint venture. Its website says the organisation will maintain trust and safety policies while using transparency reporting and third-party certifications to provide oversight of its U.S. operations.

The restructuring comes several months after the U.S. joint venture formally began operating. TikTok has continued releasing new U.S. features since then, including its Local Feed and other discovery products, while saying more than 200 million Americans now use the service.

TikTok has not announced any additional U.S. office closures alongside the Nashville decision.
