Google is making its Quick Share feature easier to use by letting Android users exchange contact information, photos, videos, and other files by bringing compatible devices together. The update begins rolling out on Pixel 6 and newer phones, with selected Samsung devices following soon.
Google announced the feature alongside its Pixel 11 lineup on August 12. In its official announcement, the company said the update is designed to create an instant, two-way exchange between nearby Android devices.
For contact information, users can bring two compatible Android phones close together from the home screen. Photos and videos can be selected through the Share Sheet before the devices are tapped together to transfer the content.
Quick Share Becomes More Similar to Apple’s NameDrop
The interaction is similar to Apple’s NameDrop, which allows nearby iPhone and compatible Apple Watch users to exchange contact information by bringing their devices together. Apple introduced NameDrop with iOS 17.
Google has also been expanding Quick Share beyond transfers between Android devices. The company previously added compatibility with Apple’s AirDrop, initially allowing Pixel 10 users to exchange photos, videos, and files with nearby iPhones before extending support to additional Android phones.
The new tap-to-share functionality is initially available on Pixel 6 and newer devices. Google said support will soon reach the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8, with more Android devices scheduled to receive the feature by the end of 2026.
The update adds another nearby-sharing option to Android without replacing the existing Quick Share interface. Users can still select files and recipients through the regular sharing controls when they do not want to bring two devices together.
