Anthropic Takedown Notice Removes Thousands Of GitHub Repositories After Code Leak

Anthropic triggered the removal of thousands of repositories on GitHub after issuing a copyright takedown notice linked to an accidental release of source code for its Claude Code tool.

The incident began when a software engineer identified that a recent release had unintentionally exposed access to the source code of Claude Code. The code was subsequently shared by users across GitHub, where developers examined it for insights into how the system operates.

Takedown Notice And Broad Impact

Anthropic responded by filing a takedown request under U.S. copyright law, asking GitHub to remove repositories containing the leaked material. According to GitHub records, the notice affected approximately 8,100 repositories.

The scope of the action extended beyond the intended targets. It included legitimate forks of Anthropic’s own public repository, leading to disruption for developers whose projects were temporarily taken offline.

Company Response And Reversal

Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code, said the broad impact of the takedown was unintended. Anthropic later retracted most of the notices, limiting enforcement to a single repository and 96 related forks that contained the leaked source code.

A company spokesperson said the issue arose because the flagged repository was part of a larger fork network connected to Anthropic’s official repository, causing the takedown to cascade across multiple linked projects.

GitHub has since restored access to the affected repositories following the retraction.

Context And Ongoing Implications

The incident highlights challenges in managing source code exposure and enforcement actions within large open-source ecosystems. It also comes as Anthropic prepares for a potential public listing, where operational handling of such events may face increased scrutiny.
