Sonder, a London-based startup, is positioning itself as an alternative to traditional dating platforms by combining unstructured digital profiles with in-person events, as its founders respond to what they describe as growing user fatigue with existing apps.
Founded by Mehedi Hassan, Helen Sun, Lenard Pratt, and Hannah Kin, the platform aims to shift away from standard swipe-based interactions toward more personalised and social experiences.
Alternative Approach To Profiles And Matching
Sonder allows users to create free-form profiles designed as digital collages or mood boards, rather than structured templates. The founders said this format is intended to encourage more authentic self-expression compared with conventional profile prompts.
The app supports both romantic and platonic connections, expanding its use beyond traditional dating scenarios. It has attracted around 6,500 users in London without paid marketing.
While the platform incorporates artificial intelligence, it limits its use to behind-the-scenes functions. The system analyses screenshots of user profiles to suggest potential matches, but does not offer tools for generating profiles automatically. Hassan said this approach is intended to preserve user input and reduce reliance on automated content.
Focus On In Person Social Interaction
Sonder also organises recurring in-person events, including activities such as speed drawing sessions, presentation nights, and themed social gatherings. These events are designed to create opportunities for interaction without the expectations typically associated with dating environments.
Co-founder Sun said the recurring nature of events allows users to meet others over time without pressure to form immediate connections. The model draws comparisons to other social formats, such as group activities, while offering a broader range of interests.
Context Within Dating App Market
The app enters a market where established platforms are introducing new features to retain users. Tinder has begun testing in-person experiences, while Bumble has introduced AI-driven tools, including a dating assistant.
Sonder’s founders said users are showing interest in alternatives that emphasise social interaction and reduce repetitive digital engagement.
Early Stage Development And Future Plans
The company has not yet raised external funding, and its founders are currently working on the platform alongside full-time jobs. Hassan said the team is seeking investment to expand operations while continuing to build the product locally.
The founders said they aim to develop a platform that encourages more direct interaction and sustained engagement, combining digital discovery with offline experiences.
