Anthropic Starts Rolling Out India Pricing for Claude

Anthropic has started showing Indian rupee pricing for Claude subscriptions in India, its largest market outside the U.S. The change reduces one friction point for Indian users who previously had to pay in U.S. dollars and deal with currency conversion on cards.

The rollout has begun across Claude’s website and mobile apps for some users, though payments through India’s Unified Payments Interface are not yet supported. Users still need to pay by card or through Apple’s and Google’s app store billing systems.

India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it the service’s second-largest market after the U.S., according to Anthropic. The new pricing comes as the company increases its focus on Indian developers, businesses and enterprise customers.

Claude Plans Now Show Rupee Prices

On Claude’s website in India, Claude Pro is listed at ₹2,000 a month when billed annually. Claude Max starts at ₹11,999 a month, while Team plans start at ₹2,399 per seat per month.

Those prices include local taxes, but they are still higher than comparable U.S. pricing. In the U.S., Claude Pro starts at $17 a month with annual billing, Claude Max starts at $100 a month, and Team starts at $20 per seat per month.

Prices on Claude’s mobile apps may vary slightly from the website because of app store billing. Anthropic has not publicly announced when rupee pricing will be available to all users in India.

The lack of UPI support also leaves Anthropic behind OpenAI on local payment access. OpenAI introduced Indian rupee pricing for ChatGPT in August with UPI support, making subscriptions easier to buy for users who rely on India’s instant payments network.

Anthropic Expands Its India Business

Anthropic’s pricing update follows a broader push into India. The company opened a Bengaluru office in February and appointed former Microsoft India managing director Irina Ghose to lead its business in the country.

It has also partnered with large Indian IT services companies, including Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, as it tries to scale enterprise AI deployments. TCS said it would equip 50,000 associates with Claude across engineering, finance, legal, marketing and sales work.

The India expansion has not been without setbacks. In June, Anthropic suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for non-U.S. entities, prompting concern among some Indian developers and startup founders who depend on U.S. AI tools.

Access to Fable 5 has since been restored, though Mythos 5 remains restricted. The episode highlighted the risks Indian companies face when building on foreign AI models whose availability can change quickly.

India is a major growth market for AI companies because of its large developer base, technology workforce and fast-growing startup ecosystem. The harder challenge is converting heavy usage into paid subscriptions in a price-sensitive market.

For Anthropic, rupee pricing is a practical step toward localizing Claude for Indian users. But without UPI support or lower entry-level pricing, the company may still face friction as it tries to compete with ChatGPT, Gemini and local AI alternatives.
