Apple is reportedly struggling to maintain supplies of the MacBook Air as the global memory chip shortage spreads to its most popular computer. Delivery estimates for some models have slipped into the second half of August, while certain customised configurations may not arrive until September.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that memory constraints had already affected the Mac mini and Mac Studio, which sell in lower volumes than the MacBook Air. The latest delays indicate that the shortage is now affecting a central part of Apple’s Mac business.
MacBook Air Delivery Times Extend Into September
Customers ordering some MacBook Air models through Apple’s online store are facing longer waits than usual. Retailers have also reported that availability has become increasingly limited as Apple struggles to secure enough memory components.
The company introduced its latest MacBook Air with the M5 chip in March 2026, offering both 13-inch and 15-inch versions. Apple’s official launch announcement said the computers would become available from March 11 in more than 30 countries and regions.
Apple normally offers next-day delivery for Mac models that are in stock, making the extended estimates an indication that affected configurations are unavailable for immediate shipment. Its shipping policy says most other products qualify for free two-day delivery.
AI Demand Tightens Memory Supply
The shortage has been linked to growing demand from AI companies, which require large quantities of memory for data centres and advanced computing systems. Chip manufacturers have redirected more capacity towards higher-value components used in AI infrastructure, reducing supply for consumer computers and other devices.
Apple is reportedly responding by increasing some prices and considering memory components from Chinese suppliers. Expanding its supplier base could help the company secure more chips, although qualifying new components for its computers may require additional testing and production adjustments.
The shortage previously affected Apple’s Mac mini and Mac Studio before reaching the higher-volume MacBook Air. Continued constraints could make it harder for Apple to meet demand during the back-to-school shopping period.
Apple Delays Education Promotion
Apple postponed the start of its US college student promotion from its usual June period until July 16. The company’s 2026 education offer terms state that eligible computers and promotional products remain subject to availability.
The latest campaign places greater attention on the entry-level MacBook Pro than previous promotions. Some marketing materials also warn that the MacBook Air is subject to availability, reflecting the supply limitations affecting the model.
Apple continues to include the MacBook Air in its education programme, alongside the MacBook Pro and selected iPad models. The company has not publicly confirmed how long the delays will continue or how many configurations are affected.
