Reddit is upgrading its moderation and abuse-prevention systems in an effort to make communities easier for new users to join. The company says stronger built-in protections could eventually reduce moderators’ reliance on account age and karma thresholds, which can block legitimate newcomers from posting.
The changes are part of a broader infrastructure programme covering moderation, Reddit’s developer platform, data scraping and its legacy desktop site. Reddit says more than 130 million people now visit the platform each day across more than 100,000 communities.
Reddit Wants Fewer Barriers for New Users
Many communities require accounts to reach a certain age or karma score before users can post or comment. Karma increases when other Reddit users upvote someone’s posts and comments, making it a common way for moderators to filter spam, bots and abusive accounts.
Reddit said those safeguards serve a legitimate purpose but can also prevent genuine first-time users from participating. Its longer-term goal is to improve platform-level abuse detection so individual communities can rely less heavily on karma and account-age restrictions.
The company has not said that karma itself is disappearing. Instead, its importance as a moderation requirement could decrease as Reddit develops more sophisticated tools for detecting spam, brigading, ban evasion and other forms of abuse.
AI-Powered Rules Hub Expands
Reddit is also expanding testing of Rules Hub, a suite of moderation tools that lets moderators choose which community rules should be automatically enforced. Moderators can decide whether matching content should be sent to a queue, filtered or removed, while reviewing logs showing how those rules perform.
Rules Hub has been tested by moderators in more than 700 communities. All newly created communities can now access the tool, with wider availability for existing communities planned later this year.
Unlike Reddit’s older Automod tools, which largely rely on exact keywords and patterns, Rules Hub uses large language models to determine whether a post or comment matches the intent of a rule. Reddit says this allows the system to better interpret natural language, context and less obvious cases while leaving enforcement decisions under moderator control.
The company has also expanded Post & Comment Guidance, which tells users about community requirements while they are preparing a submission. Newer functions include Post Flair Guidance and Top Comment Check.
Reddit Is Updating Older Infrastructure
Reddit said it will gradually move important moderator workflows and bots away from its legacy Old Reddit infrastructure and onto newer systems. It is also limiting new access to its public API and encouraging third-party developers to move applications onto the Reddit Developer Platform.
The company has introduced a $1 million migration programme to support developers making that transition. Reddit says the changes will also give it more control over automated activity while strengthening protections against unauthorised data scraping and spam.
The updates follow a strong second quarter in which Reddit reported $805 million in revenue, up 61% year over year, while daily active unique visitors increased 18% to 130.3 million. Weekly active unique visitors reached 514.6 million, although CEO Steve Huffman warned investors that search referral traffic remained volatile.
Reddit said its product focus now includes converting more of those weekly visitors into daily users by making communities easier to discover, understand and participate in.
