OpenAI is removing rate limits on text-based ChatGPT conversations for Free and Go users as it expands access to its latest models. GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for those plans, while a new Think button will give users additional reasoning power for more difficult questions.
ChatGPT now serves 1 billion people each week, according to OpenAI. The company said unlimited text conversations will begin rolling out next week, although separate usage limits will remain for file uploads, images and other tools.
GPT-5.6 Luna Becomes the Free Default
GPT-5.6 Luna will replace GPT-5.5 as the default model for Free and Go users starting this week. OpenAI describes Luna as a model designed to provide reliable everyday answers while supporting significantly broader access than previous versions.
For harder questions, users will be able to tap a new Think button that gives GPT-5.6 Luna more time to reason before responding. Unlimited text conversations and the Think option are expected to become available next week, subject to abuse safeguards.
OpenAI said an internal evaluation covering financial, medical and legal questions found that responses containing at least one factual error were about 62% less common with GPT-5.6 Luna than with GPT-5.5 Instant. The company published the results as part of its official ChatGPT update.
Plus and Pro Get an Updated GPT-5.6 Sol
ChatGPT Plus and Pro users are receiving an updated version of GPT-5.6 Sol designed specifically for everyday conversations. OpenAI said it produces more focused responses, adjusts the amount of detail to match the question and is more reliable when handling facts involving dates, numbers, rules and sources.
The model will handle both quick answers and deeper reasoning, reducing the difference between ChatGPT’s Instant and Thinking experiences. In OpenAI’s internal evaluation, responses containing factual errors were 68% less common with GPT-5.6 Sol than with GPT-5.5 Instant.
Plus and Pro subscribers are also getting a new thinking slider across ChatGPT’s web, mobile and desktop apps. Users can keep reasoning low for straightforward questions or increase it for tasks involving research, planning, writing, coding and more complex decisions.
Work and Codex Models Remain Unchanged
The updated GPT-5.6 Sol is specifically optimized for the standard ChatGPT experience. OpenAI said the separate GPT-5.6 Sol version used by Work and Codex is not changing as part of this release.
The updated Sol model and thinking slider are available to Plus and Pro subscribers starting today. GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default for Free and Go users during the week, followed by unlimited text chats and the Think button next week.
