Laytr Launches Privacy-Focused App To Save Articles, Videos, PDFs, And More For Later

Laytr is positioning itself as more than a traditional read-it-later service following the shutdown of Mozilla’s Pocket in August. The new app allows users to save a wide range of web content, including articles, recipes, videos, screenshots, PDFs, bookmarks, and browser tabs, while storing all data locally through Apple’s ecosystem instead of on company servers.

The app arrives as former Pocket users continue searching for alternatives after Mozilla discontinued its popular save-for-later service. Unlike many competitors, Laytr focuses on creating a personal archive rather than simply maintaining a reading list.

Designed To Handle More Than Articles

Laytr automatically identifies and sorts different types of saved content. Users can organize items into collections called “cases,” making it easier to group related materials together.

The app also includes a reminder system that allows users to schedule when a saved item should resurface. This feature can be used for articles, recipes, travel plans, local events, or other content that may be relevant at a specific future date.

According to the developer, the goal is to help users return to saved content instead of allowing it to disappear into an ever-growing archive.

Local Storage And Privacy Focus

One of Laytr’s defining features is its privacy-focused architecture. Everything saved in the app is stored locally and remains accessible only through the user’s own devices.

Because the service does not rely on company-managed servers, users are not required to create accounts. Content syncs across iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices through iCloud, allowing users to access their archives while keeping data within Apple’s ecosystem.

The app was created by Ontario-based independent developer Mostafa Talaat and published through his company, Waitery Inc.

Talaat said he began building the app after learning Pocket would be shutting down. He said avoiding server-side storage was a deliberate decision designed to keep user data private.

“What you save says a lot about you, and I didn’t want to be holding it,” Talaat told TechCrunch. He added that Laytr can also import Pocket exports, allowing former Pocket users to move their archives without starting over.

No AI Features Or Personalized Feeds

Laytr’s privacy-first approach also shapes what the app does not offer. The service does not create personalized recommendation feeds and does not use artificial intelligence to summarize, categorize, or tag content automatically.

Instead, the app focuses on archiving, organization, reminders, and content retrieval while leaving user data entirely under the owner’s control.

Pricing And Export Options

The app is free to use with a limit of 30 saved items. Users who want unlimited storage can subscribe to the Premium tier for $1.99 per month, $14.99 per year, or purchase a lifetime plan for $39.99.

The lifetime option is currently discounted to $24.99 through the end of December. Talaat said future development efforts will focus on expanding language support.

Users who cancel a subscription will retain access to previously saved content. However, they will not be able to add new items until they either renew their subscription or reduce their archive to fewer than 30 items.

Laytr also allows users to export their entire archive as a ZIP file. The export includes Markdown and HTML versions of saved content along with associated notes, tags, dates, and collections.
