CedarDB Launches Cloud Database Combining Analytics and Transactions for AI Agents

Munich-based database startup CedarDB has launched CedarDB Cloud, a fully managed database service that combines transactional processing and analytical queries in a single system. Announced on October 14, 2026, the service is designed to help businesses process everyday transactions while allowing AI agents to analyze current data without maintaining separate databases.

According to CedarDB’s official announcement, the cloud service manages infrastructure, backups, and database operations while maintaining compatibility with PostgreSQL. The launch follows beta testing and expands the company’s existing self-hosted products to organizations seeking managed database infrastructure.

How CedarDB Combines Analytics and Transaction Processing

Traditional database systems generally specialize in either transactional operations, such as processing orders and payments, or analytical workloads, such as generating reports and identifying trends. CedarDB supports both within one database engine, allowing applications and AI agents to query operational information without transferring it into a separate analytical system.

The technology originated from Umbra, a database research project at the Technical University of Munich that focused on improving processing efficiency using modern hardware. Five researchers involved in Umbra subsequently co-founded CedarDB to commercialize the technology.

CedarDB CEO and co-founder Moritz Sichert said its PostgreSQL compatibility allows businesses to adopt the system without extensively rebuilding existing applications. The compatibility also makes the database accessible through familiar tools and query structures commonly used by AI systems.

The new cloud offering supports nine instance configurations, ranging from two virtual CPUs to 192 virtual CPUs and 768 GiB of memory. Customers can manage database access, monitor performance, configure backups, and scale storage independently from computing resources.

CedarDB Expands Beyond Self-Hosted Enterprise Products

CedarDB previously introduced its free Community Edition and paid Enterprise Edition in May 2025. The Community Edition supports smaller deployments, while Enterprise provides additional capacity and support for larger production workloads.

The company also announced €5.3 million in seed funding in May 2025, led by Amplify Partners with participation from several angel investors. The financing supported its transition from university research into a commercial database business.

CedarDB initially prioritized self-hosted deployments before introducing its managed cloud offering. The new service includes a free trial for selected instance sizes, while ongoing pricing depends on computing resources, storage, and additional backups.

AI Demand Drives Competition in Database Technology

CedarDB’s launch follows growing interest in databases that can support AI agents performing transactions and analytical queries against frequently updated information. In June 2026, Databricks announced its LTAP architecture, which aims to unify operational and analytical data through a shared storage layer.

Sichert considers the development further evidence of demand for systems that reduce the need to maintain separate transactional and analytical databases. CedarDB currently employs 14 people and expects to expand its team as cloud adoption increases.

The company plans to serve its initial cloud customers with its existing workforce before considering another funding round. Sichert said additional financing would become relevant as customer demand and operational requirements grow.
