Nintendo President Confirms Generative AI Will Not Be Used in Games

Despite the growing trend of video game corporations implementing generative AI technology, Nintendo has taken a unique and public stance against its widespread use. President Shuntaro Furukawa explained the company’s position during an investor Q&A session in late June, which was spotted and translated by Tweaktown. While Nintendo remains open to experimenting with technological advancements, the company currently has no plans to utilize generative AI in creating new games due to concerns surrounding copyright issues.

In the investor Q&A, Furukawa elaborated on Nintendo’s cautious approach to generative AI. While he acknowledged that AI has already been integrated into various aspects of game development, such as non-playable characters (NPCs), he expressed reservations about the creative use of generative AI. “Generative AI, which has been a hot topic in recent years, can be more creative, but we also recognize that it has issues with intellectual property rights,” Furukawa stated.

Furukawa emphasized that Nintendo’s primary goal is to deliver unique gaming experiences that leverage the company’s decades of expertise. “We have decades of know-how in creating optimal gaming experiences for our customers, and while we remain flexible in responding to technological developments, we hope to continue to deliver value that is unique to us and cannot be achieved through technology alone,” he added.

Nintendo has always been highly protective of its intellectual property, a principle that has shaped its approach to game development and technology adoption. Unlike its competitors, Nintendo has not prioritized using the latest hardware or following video game trends. Instead, the company has focused on creating successful games within its established brands. This strategy has paid off, as evidenced by the continued strong sales of the Nintendo Switch, which remains popular despite being on the market for seven years.

In contrast to Nintendo’s cautious approach, other major video game corporations have actively embraced generative AI technology. Companies like Electronic Arts, PlayStation, and Microsoft/Xbox have integrated AI into various aspects of game development and hardware. Nvidia, for instance, has become one of America’s most valuable companies partly due to its implementation of generative AI in its chips.

The relationship between video games and AI has been complex and fraught with challenges. There has been a lot of vague language about the new features that AI can bring, such as NPC generation, and significant concerns about the impact on human workers, including voice actors. Additionally, the integration of AI has coincided with numerous layoffs throughout the game industry, raising questions about the technology’s impact on employment.

Nintendo’s approach is deeply rooted in its extensive experience and commitment to innovation. The company has a long history of creating beloved franchises and iconic games that have stood the test of time. This dedication to quality and creativity is a core part of Nintendo’s identity and continues to drive its decisions, including the cautious stance on generative AI.s

  • Selective Technological Adoption: Embracing technology that aligns with Nintendo’s values.
  • Contrast with Competitors: Different strategy compared to other major video game companies.
  • Continued Popularity of Switch: Sustained success of the Nintendo Switch console.

While generative AI presents exciting possibilities for the video game industry, Nintendo’s cautious approach underscores the importance of balancing technological advancement with intellectual property protection and creative integrity. As the industry continues to evolve, Nintendo’s commitment to delivering unique gaming experiences remains unwavering. This strategic focus, rooted in decades of experience and innovation, ensures that Nintendo continues to stand out in the competitive world of video gaming. The company’s stance serves as a reminder that technological adoption should align with a brand’s core values and long-term goals, rather than simply following industry trends.
