Google Translate May Soon Be Integrated into WhatsApp

WhatsApp is set to enhance its messaging platform with two new features, according to recent beta updates. The app is working on integrating Google Translate and rolling out a transcription feature for voice messages.

Integration of Google Translate to WhatsApp

In the latest Android beta, WABetaInfo discovered WhatsApp’s plan to integrate Google’s Live Translate into chats. This feature would allow users to translate foreign texts within the app, eliminating the need to switch between apps. Live Translate uses on-device processing, keeping personal data secure, and works offline once the required language package is downloaded.

Initially, it may support limited languages, such as Hindi and English.

Currently, Live Translate is available only on select Pixel devices, which could limit WhatsApp’s new feature to specific Android phones unless Google expands its availability or strikes an exclusive deal with Meta. The feature is still under development, and its release details remain uncertain.

Transcription Feature for Voice Messages

Additionally, WhatsApp is introducing a voice message transcription feature in its latest beta update (version 2.24.15.5) through the Google Play Beta Program. This feature, aimed at improving accessibility and convenience, allows users to read transcriptions of voice messages.

Initially announced in the 2.24.7.8 update, the transcription functionality is now available to some beta testers in certain countries.

The transcription feature generates voice message transcripts on-device, ensuring privacy as the data is not sent to external servers. Beta testers can download language data packages, including:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • Portuguese (Brazil)
  • Russian
  • Hindi

The availability of these languages suggests that the feature is currently limited to users in regions where these languages are widely spoken.

Transcribing voice notes offers several benefits. It improves accessibility for hearing-impaired users, provides convenience in noisy environments, and allows users to quickly read lengthy voice messages. Transcriptions also offer a quick reference for later searches, enabling users to find and review the content of voice notes without replaying the audio.

This transcription feature is gradually rolling out to more beta testers and is expected to enhance the overall functionality and user experience of WhatsApp.
